Saying Goodbye to 2018… And looking forward too!

2018 had been a year when I finally took charge of my life I feel. 

My kids are all out on their own and the end of this year is seeing them each settling in to their chosen paths well.  Me and my honey sold a house and bought our dream home moving from the ocean to the mountains. 

Leaving a little water feature on a back porch and gaining a pond with a built in grist mill in our back yard!

This home is becoming everything we thought it could be!!!  We even got to meet the people that fashioned it into the house we bought from a little building near the pond that didn’t exist anything like it does today!  We have watched many of our dreams come true and I finally have not only a guest room for friends and family… but a sewing room and a place for my 10 foot hand quilting frame. 

Likewise, my honey has space in our well insulated attached garage for some of his storage needs as well as an out building he can enjoy the rain hitting the metal roof and have room for all his guy tools and things!

We are certainly feeling blessed as we reflect on every place 2018 has brought us.  We have lots of hopes and dreams for 2019 but let’s stay focused on 2018 for this post 🙂

I did finish my stocking with no time to spare!!!

I even cleaned my desk up and caught it on digital media for a sweet memory! lol

 I took a photo for fun that I really like too …

And one of my honey with his new hat!

It was made in Australia and is a top grade brand too… Akubra my honey says is originally an aboriginal word for head covering!  🙂  How cool is that!!!    It is made of a 6 week process beginning with rabbit fur and varnish and ending with a cool hat with a leather braid trim and this cool feather and button 🙂

 

We even decorated for Christmas … a surprise to both of us really… but we found some economical lighted display items at a local big box store and had fun decorating with what we found 🙂  Our flag pole turned into a 20 foot Christmas tree… those light s are blue.  And the snowman is lighted as well and is 9 foot tall !!!

Rick got a steroid shot in his hip to avoid surgery for a bit and is finding enough relief from the shot that he was able to do the decorating… unfortunately… it isn’t lasting as he had hoped.  Also he got the nasty cold that is going around so we are fighting it from all angles with herbs and cold medications too… Please pray that he feels better or send up happy thoughts if prayer isn’t your thing! Thanks 🙂

I found lots of different chocolates in my new stocking Christmas morning… I must have been a good girl this year to get so much yummy stuff… I still haven’t eaten it all! lol  Next year I must ask Santa personally to leave a bit of fun stuff for my honey too… but he doesn’t care for chocolate really… think Santa would leave other stuff instead???

We had to send Daisy this past August to live with my best friend Connie… it was very sad for us but a good thing for Daisy and for Connie and her family too…

 but the dander of a doxie is not good for me with COPD or my honey with allergies in general and newly diagnosed Asthma as well…

Not wanting to be dogless … we adopted our little Molly who is a more hypoallergenic mixed breed of shih tzu and poodle called a shih poo…

I started an Etsy shop and have sold a few things there…

And this winter… I am learning how to safely start a fire with gas logs… maybe this is easy for some but I am very shy about doing this on my own…

I LOVE LOVE LOVE having a fireplace though that I can start without real logs to have to shovel and mess with the after affects from… the gas the fuels the logs also gives us heat via furnace so it is nice have propane handy for both purposes.

So I shared my honey got a cool hat and an amazing deal on some tools for his Christmas… here is what my daydreaming was all about…

I named her Cleopatra… she is from the 1954 era and is a Singer 319w.  My best friend Connie has a multi shade green version of her… they also make a rarely found tan version.  When I saw they made a black with gold Egyptian decals though… it was just pure unadulterated desire to have one myself… after hearing Connie chat endlessly about hers! lol

Cleo has 5 built in cams and a cam holder for more designs to add to the front of her using those old typewriter style levels.  I also got a full set of these fashion disc for Christmas and have some scissors that more match her than the scissors in the photo above. 
She is a 3/4 size machine but is HEAVY DUTY in how she preforms… so I have been using her exclusively in December for all my utility and crafty sewing completions.  I will use Gloria (my Singer 301a) for quilt piecing as she handles that great!  Gloria also has a wonderful working seam guide that Cleo doesn’t care for! lol

 Here is my current work in progress on her… and my next to be hand quilted for our bed… maybe mid year 2019 this quilt will see the frame though!

 Here is the plan on how this quilt center will look… I have all the pieces cut … just need to web the center and start on the borders I have planned… but crafty sewing and Christmas and nesting in our new home got in the way! lol

Molly celebrated 6 months old with a haircut… we were trimming her but this was after her first professional grooming.  My honey is still shook up about how she changed just with a haircut but I like it 😀  He will get used to it over time I hope!!!

 Slow stitching progress for this year… I finished this one for my daughter… but she has to get her diploma before she receives it… so it is on our guest bed at the moment where I can enjoy it and be excited to send it to her or gift it to her when I see her next 🙂

 I pieced and hand quilted this quilt… the pillow shams coordinate but I machine quilted them for speed and durability over time… my honey is very oily skinned… these get washed weekly to keep them clean too!

 This is a big view of the quilt on my hand quilting frame at this moment… I am on the 4th row up of stars now….

Here is the next quilt I will hand quilt when I am done with the Stars Among Us quilting…

 That log cabin has been waiting a couple years from when it was pieced to get quilted … but it will go in the kitchen where the snowcouple is now 😀

Then I have the whole cloth quilt I have worked on over 3 years time… and it is still going and not yet halfway done.  I have added quilting to it every now and then but have been so busy with other stuff… it hasn’t gotten much playtime… I hope to make progress on it too in 2019.
This photo on the left was taken in Florida.. it is remounted in that PVC frame my honey fashioned for me before I got the Hinterberg wood frame.  I like them both really!  I had to take it out of the frame for the move to the mountains in January though… it only got mounted back in the frame over the summer and waits for me now!

I will say to you though… I am VERY excited about my next project after the log cabin (or before if Connie gets it finished to a flimsy before ) … I will be hand quilting a swoon patterned 1930’s era fabric quilt she is piecing now to add ambiance to her room… and because hand quilting a large queen (105 square quilt top) without my big frame isn’t near as much fun… so I am going to gift her that for this year 🙂  SEW EXCITED TO QUILT HER EXQUISITE PIECING!!!!

I have quilted a quilt for Connie early in my quilting history… it was fun but it was a hoopless quilting and not the work I do today… I much prefer the artistry of my quilting today to my learning stitches that brought me here.  I am linking this hand quilting info to my friend Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching post… come check out what other bloggers are sharing with things they have completed this year or worked on if not finished HERE!

I am very proud of my machine quilting on these two projects ( the wall hanging snow people and the tree skirt I fashioned from Christmas fabric scraps I had on hand)!

 I love how it looks early in the morning when I wake!

And I love the Santa blown glass ornament we added this year to commemorate the year we met… 2011!

 In closing I have some VERY SPECIAL news to share….
I will officially be called “Grandma” by someone I can’t wait to meet…
I visions of quilts and bibs and spit up rags all ready to make!!!  Just waiting for colors and other decisions to be made… and for her to have her friends hosted baby shower so I can make what else she may need… this baby is growing in my daughter in love Heather and along with my son James they are very excited to have this welcomed addition to their family.  They are making lots of changes to prepare for their new baby and I am very excited !!!

You may remember Amethyst Stars that I completed by hand over new years 2017/2018. 

It left my frame empty over new years too !!! lol

As I commemorated their quilt with this label and my own label… and spend new years day sewing on binding and mailed it off to them to enjoy!

I also have this little wall hanging waiting to get hand stitching finished…

 And these blocks I started making and have worked on with Gloria here and there…

Maybe I can look back on this post and between my finger skills and Gloria’s skills and now Cleo’s skills I can finish some fun things I started already before starting MORE! lol

I do hope to make me a wristlet clutch soon though… hmmm! hahaha

Busy Week… Now time to slow it down !!!

Hi y’all!  Thanks for stopping in for a visit … we are experiencing very cool weather post Thanksgiving so I am getting lots of quilting done.  Look at the beautiful plant we got earlier this week!

When we bought it … it was just 2 stalks but water and sunshine from my sewing room window gave us blooms galore!!!

 Here are the photos we got for Thanksgiving of Daisy Meadows… from across the pond!!!

 We had a wonderful Thanksgiving feast with ham and lots of sides… some homemade and some store bought and all were fabulous together… still nibbling on a few of the leftovers too 💖  My favorite thing from the holidays are leftovers and family time.

And here she is trying to be my assistant while I sew in my sewing room! lol

I think this may be the best pic I have been able to catch of her and hope to do some applique of an ornament of her face or something… ideas are bubbling from this shot though!!!

Last week I enjoyed a bit of fireside stitching…

 And enjoyed a few days of beautiful sunsets from the windows by my frame….

 Then this morning I made a new Sunday morning photo for December for facebook…

 Speaking so much of facebook… look what I saw completed in one of my groups….

 It is appliqued and hand quilted and I am in lust with this pattern … so I found one for half the going price on eBay and am anxiously awaiting the directions…

This is a complex pattern to me who has done very little applique … so I will ponder the best way to make this wall hanging with my skill set but I love it and hope to have it done and hanging for our Christmas season next year !!!

As for Christmas this year… I finished the tree skirt I was working on with a piping around the edges instead of binding….  I did enjoy the string piecing of the center and working out the math… I like the star finish too… just did NOT care for the piping edge… I should have taken the extra time to do a binding edge or something instead of bagging it for my skills! lol  Lesson learned for sure 😀

 Don’t know if you can see this photo a bit better but I even made button loops and sewed on holly leaf buttons down the open side.  The photo is a bit whippy jawed I see now… but it was fairly fun… not as easy as I hoped but finished is better than perfect for sure on this kind of project!!!!

But.. instead of continuing to complain about the finish I will enjoy it for years to come… It was fun and has some pretty sentimental fabrics in it that make it completely ours 🙂

Here was a great statement I read that Bonnie Hunter shared this morning… it rings VERY true for me….

I finished the blocks for Appalachian Delight’s center and came up with a layout me and my honey like as far as all the colors and backgrounds go…

 I found a new website to me with calculations on making the square in a square cornerstones correctly too…

There were plenty other units they offered calculations to as well… look at my photo for the website and check it out if you have interest/need!

I cut the sashings lengthwise for less stretching during assembly and then cut the outer square parts… wrong the first time but had enough fabric in this solid burgundy to cut them right AND cut the binding for the quilt too ❤  YAY!!!

I am really savoring and enjoying this quilt assembly… I am in no rush because I have the quilt I am working on hand quilting.. then I am HOPEFULLY going to be quilting a quilt for my bestie that she is piecing now… a Swoon quilt block design 😀  I am excited to quilt this for her!!!

As for my hand quilting… I got the border and some of the center done last Sunday…

And somehow worked my way across without a photo to be found in my phone!!!  So here we are yesterday as I marked out the last of the center…

And here I am this morning with about half that done… The rest of the center and the border will be my goal for today!!  Watching Hallmark movies and stitching 😀  Yummy!

With that goal in mind.. I am linking to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching linky HERE… She is located in Canada and they are wishing they could exit daily life to hibernate during the dreary winter months!  I am sure in a month or so I will be ready to join her cause too ❤ lol!

 I just this that old sewing machines are beautiful and feel blessed to sew on a 1950’s machine lot myself 🙂

Blessed Easter… Slowing down & "BE-ing"!!!

When was the last time you just “were”… that is what is meant by “being” 🙂

Ponder what Easter means to you today as well.. instead of rushing to wake and rushing to quilt.. this week I have pondered this holiday weekend and slowly welcomed it to me … how nice it has been!!!

When I did wander outside my bedroom this is what greeted me…

Happy Easter to me was my first thought… how blessed I am to live in Florida and it is just us 2 here now ( all the kids are doing their own things) … and God is watching over us… it is nice to finally be in a place where I can “Just Be” as Kathy shares today an article on this subject HERE… I am linking to her blog also with my hand quilting progress from this last week…

 Above you can see the “legend” of sorts I have made for myself… I had 94 flowers to quilt plus the triangles in between!  This legend came from a mini drawing I did then enlarged on my printer a couple times until I got it big enough to see and use a highlighter to color in the finished parts…

Today I am watching episodes in Season 5 of “Call the Midwife”… I love this show and will happily wait till season 6 is released in the fall sometime… I sure hope so anyway!!! lol

In order to get this far I had to come up with a design for the bottom border… none of my stencils worked… or were the right size… so I had to think of something on my own… I am not very imaginative so I pulled out this book I keep in my library for just such occasions…

 I got this off Amazon… it has been my most “go-to” book I have in my quilting library I do believe!

I flipped to borders and found one I liked…

 Then I filled up my printer with a few sheets of cardstock and printed off the “orange peel” part in larger sizes until I got it large enough!  this is trial and error for sure though…

Once I got that shape large enough.. and cut away the curliques I didn’t care for for this quilt border…. I decided it needed a circle or something … but then I couldn’t find my “perfect circles!” lol  so I found this circular object that was just the right size and put a circle of tape on the back to make it stay in place for each move …

 And ta-da… here you can see the first few done… along with my own basting at the edge and quilting 1/4″ in across the top!!!…

Here are the tools I used to mark this border… if you look closely you can see this border is marked now… but I just use a Dritz Mark B Gone marker that spritzes away once stitched with water…

Here are a couple of finished “flowers”… I am using Aurifil 28/2 thread I had in my stash of threads…

Aurifil 28 wt and YLI 40/3 wt are my go to threads for hand quilting… I enjoy perle cottons too and used a white 12 wt perle for the border I was sharing above… but am sticking to the lighter weight Aurifil throughout the center of this quilt.  Quilting design of the flowers I decided and the centers needed something so they wouldn’t puff up… both the flowers and triangles needed that extra bit (thanks Wendy for your advice here .. spot on!)… so with my quilting plan in hand I am moving forward slow and steady!!!

I have also been pondering a new project that is coming up for me…

Last year we donated some kid stuff we had to a fledgling local charity… she gave us a tshirt for our donations… instead of using the tshirt to wear I offered (once I got caught up) to make her a banner from the tshirt… using the tshirt as a center for it.  The founder of this charity loved the idea then 🙂

Well that charity has grown quite a bit since them… I remain an anonymous donor and am now gonna exchange this first tshirt for her newer more streamlined logo tshirt and make that banner… no time like Easter to make you realize charities you serve deserve your time as well!!!  This will involve imagination, experience, and machine quilting though.. so should go together quick once I decide what I am gonna do with her on Monday!!!

Meanwhile this sits right where I left it last week when I finished cutting…

And I have marked about 50 or so of these little 1 1/2″ squares so far with glitter pen…

That part is so fun and relaxing… but I wanted to make progress on the hand quilting because when this quilt gets finished to a flimsy I KNOW I will want to quilt it up for my son and his wife to enjoy as quick as I can.. so I am making headway first on Batik Hollyhock Garden… about halfway I figure I will get bored or need a change.. I will then pick this up and run with it… that PLUS I am a bit gunshy about some of the parts of this quilt… you know each quilt is a learning adventure and this one is no different… lol!  I will share my learning points as I put it all together down the road.

As for today.. I will hand quilt only… also working out some today on my new recumbent bike I got last week….

 It is a fun way to relax my joints and back after hand quilting a while and it is sooo quiet too… lol!

So hope you take time to “be” today and have a blessed Easter day as well… Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice… and was glorified by His Father to rise up again… so now you can show your appreciation by “be-ing” today!

Weekend Hodge Podge ~ April 2014

Welcome to my corner of blogland… today I have lots to share! 

So I am calling it a Hodge Podge… I have a bloggy friend who follows someone that does this on Wednesdays… answers misc. questions for fun and to share more of herself with her bloggy friends… so I am gonna do my version this weekend!

What are you passionate about?

Currently I am hand quilting ~ my major passion IS hand quilting right now! I am making my honey a quilt that will be a queen throw size… very large! lol

You can see a snippet of what I am currently working on by viewing my blog on it’s own page instead of in a reader!  My blog header changes every month or so with a pic of what I am working on featured somewhere on it 🙂

Here is block #10 on my count down…

I am now about 3/4 done with this block!  WhOOP!!!

I am also passionate about vintage sewing machines and own 3…

not one Singer in the bunch either 🙂  You can see 2 of my vintage machines in my header… sweet Fiona and reliable Francis… I recently added a zig zagger Japanese class 15 clone I named Nelly to my little group of machines… I only sew to repair things or to piece/bind quilts.. so these machines do all I need!  Check out my post on how easy vintage is to care for by yourself HERE!

My fave place is a place just for hand quilters called Celebrate Hand Quilting group.  You can request entry here… and Caron or Janet will grant you access if you are a quilty person and this sounds like something you would like go for it because the eye candy and knowledge shared there for hand quilting techniques is nothing short of AMAZING!

I don’t tweet, or instagram or anything else… I am almost 50 so I feel pretty hip as I am 🙂 HA!

For the love of hand quilting!

I really love to slow stitch… via hand quilting!  So when I saw this design I knew it needed to go on the quilt I am currently quilting!

In the blocks of this quilt for my honey ….

The piecing is far from perfect … but piecing is NOT my gift… the hand quilting is 😀

But how to mark these intricate blocks… I tried all my marking utensils (and I have a LOT) but all were VERY labor intensive… finally I found the POUNCE PAD… and baby powder 🙂

Here is my marked block.. I didn’t use the stick of chalk but I am not sure I won’t so it got included in this pic 🙂  It marks well on all the fabrics though… as does the pounce pad with baby powder added to it.

And here is how the bottom right corner looks finished….

see how the powder fades away… it doesn’t fade completely but sunlight is my fave light for this process by far!!!

Overall do I wish I was doing an overall design as many suggested as these are busy blocks already???

Absolutely not… The joy of the hand quilting process makes it all worth is along with the desire my honey has of seeing these designs come to life forever in HIS quilt! lol  Truly how he feels so it is my honor to quilt these designs.

Feather count is up to 32 of the 49 feathers to do (over 65% done with that part)… here is a pic I showed last week that shows how cool the design is as I stitch a feather too 🙂  I REALLY like stitching the feathers… they are playful and fun!

Busy, Busy Sunday :)

Today has turned from a quiet stitching morning to a mission completing afternoon!  Yipee!

I am ready to start handquilting my Christmas presents…

I have these TWO lovelies both pin basted with bamboo and cotton batting and a cute coordinating fabric for the backing… I am planning a cranberry colored binding to tie in the darker red of the center and outer points… here are the two tops hand pieced completely 🙂

What do you think?  They are about 20″ across and were pretty easy to hand piece for a first experience 🙂  The pattern is a free download from Fons & Porter here!

So as I do a WHOOP for finishing both of these tops in just a couple weeks… my honey WHOOPs about something else!

He is renewing our shed… first he moved it away from the side of the house using just 2 x 4’s and dowel rod we had left over in the garage.. nothing was purchased for that part… and he used the jack from the van! lol

Then he painted it all white with exterior white paint we bought last month for painting the exterior doors.  We bought a quart of gray and 3 fence boards to make the windowbox and shutters and have leftover wood for further decoration!  WHOOP!

As I write this … guess where he is now.. drawn back to the shed cuz it is looking sooo nice!

Daisy Mae wanted to get in on the camera action even if my honey wasn’t interested 🙂

Border dance time ~ Updated!

Not only have I finished all 30 butterflies with outlines… but I have designed and started on the border of Pam’s quilt!  Yahoo!  Whoop Whoop!  (As my friend Sarah says :))

So here has been my process…
Pray over the quilt to decide the design that should be there… look at the existing quilting and see what will complement it… consult other quilters that are focused on that style of quilting for advice…

So I prayed over it…
Drew on it with erasable pen until I decided on a design then marked the winning design that started like this…

to the fabric using tape as my 1″ measure between lines like this…

can you see the light grey lines???

Using plain old painters tape over and over until it lost its sticky to stabilize the fabric AND mark 1″ measurements… like this 🙂

Then sew on my drawn lines for the grounding effect this flying away pinwheel quilt needed!

So now I am off to sew more straight lines that meet in the middle!

I am overly inspired I think

Ha ha… is there such a thing as overly inspired???  I am so loving the work I am doing on this quilt… still not happy with all my piecing work but loving my hand quilting work!

On butterfly number 21 leaving me 9 butterflies until I start on the borders 🙂  Yipee!

But I find myself inspired to try a kit, learn some new techniques by those that know, and make some quilts for us to use instead of the store bought comforters.

So… I bought my first kit!  Yahoo… here is a screen shot of it… I found it in the July/August Love of Quilting 2013

It measures about 55 inches wide by 65 inches long… LOVE it!  It will look wonderful in my foyer or dining room so I love that it will get lots of attention when it is out… and it holds special meaning for me… meaning I feel like it was made just for me almost…

You see…
The 4 candles represent my 4 children (DL, James, Mike, & Brandi)
The 2 hearts represent my 2 loves (my husband til he died and now my honey)
The 4 poinsettas represent my 4 best friends (Pam, Brandy, Connie & Joyce)
I will bejewel the christmas tree so we avoid putting up a tree every year… this will be our place to stack presents… underneath this beautiful wall hanging
I love the chevrons across the top and bottom.. wish you could see the border fabric better but it really ties in all the colors
I may change the mittens to dauchshunds if I get bold enough but I just LOVE the fun holly border top and bottom… Have I missed an inch of this quilt kit yet?

All it is missing is the batting and backing so I will be on the lookout for something fitting for the back… or may just do muslin… not sure 🙂  Whatever it will be awesome and it will be done ALL by hand and by mine to keep!

Also coming up is my bestie Connie’s visit.  She will be staying a week and we will have a quilting fiesta while she is here… we have puzzles to work and beach trips planned… as well as a quilt shop day too!  So much quilty goodness!
