Swooning Progress & MORE ~ Lots of Links in this Post !!!

Welcome Y’all!  Happy Fall and almost time to say Hello to October!!!

Here is a wonderful applique and embroidery I pulled off of facebook from a friend with no history on who did this or where they were from.. so just enjoy and Do It >>> Say Something Kind to Someone Today 💖

I am linking to Kathy’s Quilts Slow Sunday Stitching HERE today <<<  Go check out her blog and the gorgeousness everyone is linking from their talented hands!!!!

My hands have been very busy this week as well!!!  Last week I shared Swoon Progress from my quilting frame and left you with this photo…

I have a Hinterberg hand quilting frame we bought from a kit and added our own wood and metal dowels available at big box home improvement stores… as well as leader fabric to each pole!

I am now able to load up to large queen quilts 105″ wide and as long as I care to quilt in this permanent piece of furniture… my honey built it and stained and top coated it to be a piece of furniture as well.  Best of all … no pin basting needed once you pin the quilt top and bottom (all layers are pinned) to the leaders or the backing or the batting and backing 😀  Directions come with it and there is LOTS of support from this family owned company as well.  Buy new though… don’t buy a used one unless you know the one who built it!!!

So Sunday and Monday I spent time on the outer border… here is a close up of this 3rd row of swoon blocks out of 4 rows of swoon blocks total in this quilt.  This is what I love MOST about hand quilting.. you can really customize your designs and make them accurate and make the quilt pop when the quilting is done!

See this photo from Tuesday through Friday’s work… I finished the bottom 1/3 of the swoon block (they are 24″ tall and I can only reach the 1/3 at a time all the way across) and the sashing before the second swoon block….

Then yesterday and early this morning I got this far on the second swoon block…

This Swoon pattern is easily found in varied sizes now in pattern form where cutting directions of this fat quarter friendly pattern are mapped out by the author.  This quilt was pieced by my best friend Connie and will be her main quilt on her bed once it is finished and bound and washed and dried… we are both very very excited with each progress photo.

I hope to have this done within the next couple months for a Christmas delivery too!!!  We shall see but at the pace I am able to go at the moment she should have it!!!!

This hand quilting portion of my quilt is dedicated to HQAL (Hand Quilt A Long) Group I joined a few months back after seeing this group mentioned on a friends blog post… I enjoy sharing my hand work … which is a mainstay to my sanity 😀

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

>>>  And here is a challenge for you this week!
Each day this coming week as we say goodbye to September and Hello to October… go outside and do this….

Make it a different time each day of this coming week… lets report back to each other next week on how this may have changed our appreciation for living and for life itself… sooo much beauty in the sky and surroundings… what do you see… what do you hear… what do you smell <<<

No matter what part of this wonderful world you live in … this is an awesome challenge to be a part of!

A few weeks back on my Sunday posts I shared a sneak peek of this cute hummingbird wall hanging!  Well the FREE pattern is out now and available with a video on How to do something similar to mine HERE… Information on how I did this is available with a heart design on a previous blog post HERE.  Check out both links… they will open in a separate window so you don’t lose your reading place 😀

Check out some of Lisa’s other videos if you like… she has a wide variety of fun stuff on her Youtube Channel!  She uses thinned glue for her technique and I use Steam a Seam 2 for mine… what will you use I wonder… let me know if you try this what you use to make it stick until you can fmq it through the tulle!  I added hand quilting around my edges and a binding that is machine applied then hand sewed down too 🙂

Next I want to share the progress I have made on my turkey wall hanging…  Last week I shared the layout and the Missouri Star Quilt Company video… HERE is it’s link again for ya <<<

I am doing this project with my great friend Jannessa.  She will be visible in a few more pics down…

First we picked out some flannel for our boy turkeys….  I laid mine out to get a feel of how I wanted the lights and darks to play on each other…

Then from more feminine quilting cotton (not heavy flannel) we chose fabrics we liked for the girl turkey…

Following the MSQC video with Jenny Doan for how to cut and sew the dredens to make the turkey feathers we then pressed them all in one direction and used Elmer’s School Washable Glue to hold down the side edges on the right and left ends of the feathers 🙂

Here is Jannessa pressing her turkey feathers…

After using Steam a Seam 2 (me ) and Soft Fuse (Jannessa) to fuse our turkeys to our background piece… we had made lots of progress and my honey snapped this shot for us…

I cut borders based on our plan and our likes and avoiding our dislikes and while I did all that cutting …. Jannessa straightened off my cutting table which was A HUGE MESS !!!!  Look at it now 😀

Why I hadn’t looked at this before I don’t know but after Jannessa left I looked at my calendar topper for September….
Isn’t that appropriate for how blessed I am to not have just 1 but SEVERAL great friends in this life 😀

So once Jannessa left I got back to hand quilting to chill and relax… but the next day I was ready to start the machine applique process…

I will say Jenny mentions to have tiny pieces of your fusible between the feathers and the backing for better stability during applique and SHE IS RIGHT!!!  Pins would not be enough… I also added a stabilizer (tear away) to the back of this thin quilting cotton background fabric so I wouldn’t get puckers 🙂  All that made this go quick and easy ….

I used a zig zag stitch set to medium width and length.  Then I started on the boy turkey…

My boy and girl represent me and my honey so since my honey is sooo handy… he chose a saw to hold in this wall hanging.  While my girl is holding a quilt… my fave hobby and some cute cute cute fabric Jannessa had found in her stash… I just sewed a backing to it right sides together turned it and top stitched that turning opening closed and wha – la 😀  For my honey Jannessa brought wool and felt for us to use… her honey is a vintage gun collector so she added a vintage rifle in his hands but I didn’t get a photo of it up close 😦  Sorry!

We are to get together sometime this week and I will get a close up of her chosen quilt and his fashioned vintage gun too!

After appliqueing the turkeys I added the inner border longer sides first then shorter sides so it doesn’t look so long and skinny… then I added the wide outer border with this stencil in mind for finally using it somewhere appropriate….

I plan to stitch this stencil with dark burgundy perle 12 cotton to coordinate with the inner border and the binding I am looking at as well (you can see the binding is brownish burgundy with beige flowers on it above.

To miter the borders I really have my own methods I have taken from several Youtube videos … but my favorite is HERE from The Stitch TV Youtube channel.  Here I am with my uber long boders on the opposing corners and stitching them down leaving a backstitched area just 1/4″ from the end… my scissors are pointing to that…

I planned this quilt to have the 2 mitered borders so I didn’t have to match my quilting design in that outer boder … I also plan to hand quilt 1/4″ inside each side of the inner border too for extra pop and stability of the quilting overall as well 🙂

Below you can see the binding I am planning to use… small print brownish fabric.

With the flimsy together (flimsy is a finished quilt top not yet layered up so it is more fragile or “a flimsy”) … I was ready to mark my outer border and decide what to quilt behind the turkeys on that backing fabric….

Here is my outer quilt design marked…  I use pens I get on Amazon that are water soluble markers and more affordable and more fine pointed that Dritz or any other brand I have tried… I love these 🙂

Now it is pin basted pretty heavy so no shifting occurs and I decided below you can see… to add double lines to the backing of the quilt center !!!  My batting is simply a lot of little pieces of the same batting type all sewn together to make a piece big enough… I call this “frank-en-batting” 😀 lol!

Finally time to quilt… center on my machine… sweet Cleopatra is up for the challenge for sure too!

I hope to get this done to take with us as a side project while we take a trip the end of the week where I may get to see most all my children !!!  We shall see when and how that works out … more on that next Sunday when we are back home.

So as we head into some possibly tumultuous times ahead in this country of ours… remember how lovely it is to be like a tree in the fall and let go of what you can’t control.

Now if you have made it this far …. and whether you are a resident of the US or another country… please pray for the US right now… we desperately need it… if you don’t pray … send out healing thoughts to our uproariously serious issues our country is in at this moment!!! ~ Thank You All!!!

In closing I want to thank you for visiting my corner of blogville… Have a blessed day and here is hoping October is cooler… it has been a hot and humid summer here for us 🙂

Finally… I am pondering a embroidery only sewing machine… do you have one… do you have a fave that is affordable ???  Do you have a fave video about your fave machine???  Please send it to me HERE!  Or leave me info on how to find it in a comment below 🙂

Happy Fall Y’all!

Full on Fall In North Carolina and LOTS of Progress to Share too !!

Do you do this where you live??  If you do did you remember??

I enjoyed an extra 1.5 hours of sleep this morning.. did you??? lol

I want to open this post with our drive yesterday… we went from Robbinsville, NC to Franklin, NC using the scenic (and scary to drive on) route so I could share some photos… I drove and my honey took LOTS of photos… so sit back and enjoy this show first and then I will share some quilty progress too!

Our views as we left Robbinsville, North Carolina…

And here we are going to the Wayah Road not from from our home going beside the Nantahala River… it is where LOTS of people will fish for rainbow trout and white water raft and kayak as well!

This begins the end of our photo taking as the road got more windy and narrow.. but this is the Nantahala Lake!  It is made a lake by a man made dam that provides power as well to this area 🙂

I hope you enjoyed the show like we did!
After all the beauty we saw yesterday I felt this was a cool meme too…

Mother Nature is full of surprises and she does have the best box of crayons for sure!!!

And Speaking of Crayons… I have some watercolor pencils I pulled out to use for the 1st time this past week!!!

I finally figured out how I wanted to finish my borders on this Appalachian Delight quilt…

Here is my piecing plan so I know what size units to make….

In that photo 1 square = 2″  So this quilt top will finish a bit over 100″ square … PERFECT!!!!

Here is an example of the fabrics you will see used…

The burgandy red is the sashing…
The HST border is being produced as I make each block
The next border will have larger hst’s that have the solid olive green on one side and neutral strings on the opposite side….
The burgandy red and cream herringbone fabric will go around that and be the final binding and
A wide (7″) border of the goldenrod yellow will have an uber cool stencil design on it in blackberry thread big stitch style.

Can you tell I am excited about this quilt???  It will be hand quilted … so this progress… while being pieced on my vintage 301 Gloria… will be a slow stitched finish!!!

Last week I shared progress to the left of needle nanny you see at the top of the photo below…

So I spent some time with this over the last week and got finished with what was marked in pink and marked MORE from my crazy looking stencil…

Above in my “Path to a finish” picture I am showing how I have found is best to quilt this stencil and not get lost or have to break thread and start somewhere else… I am loving this design… and the pink I am using WILL come out in the end! lol  For those that are wondering… it is chalk plain chalk.

Here is a photo of my space and set up… I LOVE IT!!!

The table to the right of my chair has casters added to it so it rolls so nice and smooth and is where I park my drink and all my quilting supplies and accessories.  The chair I sit in has arms and rollers on it as well.  The lamp is able to move easily… the other 2 lamps behind the frame I only use occasionally… but look how bright the light is with the ambient light and the lamp to the left of my chair using a daylight fluorescent bulb is usually good enough 🙂

Linking my hand quilting progress to Kathy’s Slow Stitching Sunday gang of funloving slow stitchers HERE!  Between fixing a few things and helping my honey with a few household things… I will be making progress on this triangle pattern on my quilt!

I found this cool mini ironing board on facebook Marketplace this week and Friday we arranged to buy it for $8!!!  What a steal this vintage wood and metal hinged dual sided board is.  Probably for the 1950’s or 60’s too!!!

So above is some heavier weight quilting cotton I had used as a backing on the whole cloth quilt I still have in progress… so I fashioned 2 covers and replaced the old hard batting there with 2 layers of new cotton/wool batting to use when I make bags or wallets.

Yesterday we went to Franklin on our drive through the mountains and I picked up some needed elastic to redo the smaller board to make it fit better… excited to get that project in the books.

Friday I received these 2 pillow fronts hand quilted by my bestie Connie!!!!  Yay!!!

I picked out some backing fabrics from my stash that would coordinate with the quilt we are using now and the quilt I am making… this fabric fit the bill…

Here is the one my honey will use now with the pillow form in it….

Here is the other pillow with the backing on it… and to the right you can see how I used those coordinating fabrics together to make an envelope backing 🙂

Here is the oatmeal fabric one on our bed this morning… I believe Connie bought both of the tops at “The Stencil Company”

I soaked them in the sink in plain cold water for a few hours then washed them in cold water with some clothes for a good scrubbing in laundry detergent and cold water wash and rinse…. then dried them lightly in the dryer before fashioning them into pillows…

I washed them a second time once they were made into pillows in cool water with a cold water rinse and laundry detergent and some towels then needed washing this time… so they got a second wash and dried hard in the dryer this time and no marks remain that I can see 🙂  LOVE THEM!!!!

I am planning to make myself a wristlet wallet soon… so I have pulled fabric for that ….

I found a great youtube tutorial for the wallet of my choice I can add the wristlet with donated hardward from my current wristlet wallet… and I bought a new phone case that now allows me to push all the buttons much easier than the leather one that was way past it’s usefulness did…  this photo is from eBay where I found this sweet swanky case for under $5 including free shipping and it came FAST too 😀

My favorite stretchy bracelet with beads on it broke the other night… so I have been looking for elastic string to string it… I thought I had some but haven’t located it just yet! lol
So I found this one for $1.50 in Robbinsville yesterday at a Thrift Shop we enjoy going to every now and then. Right is a close up of it on my wrist… it is a very light pink.. 🙂

Well… it has come to an end now… time to cloase but as you can see I take my own advice and am truly finally Living a Life I love!!  Are you???

Highs and Lows… and Thank a Veteran too!

Did you recall yesterday was this day??

I thanked my veteran and every veteran I came across… and although this may be an American inspired day each country can participate in thanking a Veteran for this freedoms they now have in the place we call home!

I have been busily quiet… I did get tagged in the latest facebook post to share pics each day in black and white… 7 days with a picture each day… check out my facebook feed to find what I have shared so far  HERE 🙂

I also have fallen into watching this…

Which ended with this quilt …

WoW!!!  Thumbs up on this series!!!

So today and all weekend I have focused on hand quilting and house cleaning… I am linking my hand quilting progress with Slow Stitching Sunday HERE 🙂

Kathy is asking for tips on lighting … I use very cheap light stands (see the black one in my blog header) with expensive bulbs… they are fluorescent bulbs from Lowe’s in “Daylight” and they work great giving me lots of clear white light to quilt by day or night! 😀  Hope this helps you in your ability to attain good lighting!!!

While I watched the Netflix Chik Flick… I also stitched away and reached the halfway point!!!

The receivers of this quilt read this blog… so I am including this shot for Heather to enjoy a look at row #8 at the midpoint of the quilt for her and James 🙂  ….

I am really enjoying every turn of the frame on this quilt and happy to share such good progress since my last post here on Sunday’s with Kathy.

We have also been very busy… and decided to take a much needed break to see the leaves change in North Carolina!

Here are some snippets of our journey above…. it was not a relaxing vacation like we planned tho! lol

We did have a great friend keep Daisy for this trip and that was a blessing for sure!!!

Next time we get a wild hair to go north it will not include going through Atlanta though!!!

I took multiple pics of the fog coming up in the mornings off the Appalachian Mountains and not 1 of those shots came out well… so this is my fave pic of what did turn out …

Enjoy the colors of the season wherever you are!!!

Back to quilting and laundry for me… hope you find productivity & bright light in your day!

Happy November!!! Already??

Ya’ll .. I can’t believe it is November already!!!

And time for us in the USA to turn our clocks BACK 1 hour 🙂

I enjoyed the extra hour of sleep for sure!!! But I was still up before the crickets… I will be sad when it gets dark earlier though… I enjoy the long days of summer most!!!

Did you celebrate or partake in any Halloween activites.. we did not… but I had this cute greeting in my feed from facebook.. so I snapped a shot of it to share with you!

Made me feel special though 🙂

Otherwise I have been working hard on finishing Kimber’s memory quilt… I am done now with the borders on the top edge…

And am now marking the long left side of this quilt…

I love the view as I mark though 🙂  Don’t you??

So I plan to finish all the marking and start the stitching of this long sided border… What are you up to on this fabulous Sunday??

I am linking the Border Fun I am having with Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching Linky HERE!

Have a blessed one!  Thanks for visiting 🙂

Grateful window card with HOMEMADE action wobble!

Welcome from The Paper Cabana challenge… if you haven’t been there yet go check out this weeks challenge blog and then come back to see how I made this beautiful GRATEFUL card!

Every week I will build on what I covered the week before… but if you get lost please email me and ask… I am happy to answer questions!  I don’t want anyone lost but I don’t wanna leave you unchallenged either 😉  Email me at Kathi Clower.

Now onto this weeks challenge for you.. making a homemade wobbler and a window card too!  Did you know in the US fall starts September 22?  Wow that seems early this year as the weather in southeast USA is still warm.  But time to get ready for all the fall festivities like Halloween and Thanksgiving… at least here in the US.  So today I have 2 cards I made that are just alike…

but embellished a little bit different to give them their own personality.

To start I pulled out my gypsy and made a window card using the square window on Gypsy Wanderings…. it is on the bottom line under Decor Tags if you want to use the same one I did.  I made the square into a rectangle and sized it to an A2 size front then copied it and placed it above the other and barely touching and removed the inner square for the back so it would cut the whole rectangle without the window.

Next I found the phrase I wanted to use also on Gypsy Wanderings and it was “grateful” with a leaf.  I sized up the grateful and it fit perfectly without any fussing into my rectangle.  Just make sure that it is touching all 4 sides to have a stable window card!

Once I had done that I grouped my card and welded it and checked the cut with the eyeball… PERFECT!  Then I duplicated it and my screen looked like this….

Next I copied the “grateful” and opened a second layer for it.  I found a leaf with a shadow on Gypsy Wanderings and sized it to be just larger than the leaf on grateful.  I wanted the leaf to be the fun part… thus the added action wobble we will get to in a bit.  I made 1 leaf and 1 shadow for each card and layer 2 looked like this…

Next I chose my papers… on this project that was the hardest part!  I didn’t want just traditional fall colors I wanted something different… Thanks to my CTMH rep having a great sale I had some fall paper from her with some deep teal blue and coordinating patterned paper that is great cardstock for the cards and the sentiment… Window cards can be flimsy so using good cardstock is a must if you want professional results!

Another note on choosing the base cardstock is to make sure it is double sided or you cut a color coordinating with the outside of the card to put in the inside sentiment area of your card… because it shows!

I scored my cards and used the xyron to glue my sentiment to the window card base… if you have excess glue using the xyron just rub it and it will ball up and you can throw it away 🙂  Love that!

Next I glued my leaf top to my leaf shadow… I used pretty but thin and inexpensive paper for the leaf tops and one didn’t cut well so you will see the leaves look a little different… it is all good if this happens.. that is what scissors are for and the recipient will never know UNLESS YOU TELL THEM… lol!

Now for the action wobble.  I found several how to vids on you tube and went to my craft room to see what I could come up with… you need:
2 small solid shapes… like a circle or square 1″ size (smaller is okay too just hard to tape to)
wire
tape
small diameter pen or a pencil
That is it!

Your solid shapes need to be smaller that what you are applying your action wobble to… you can make it bigger but I find I need small ones when I need them and don’t wanna have to run out to get them… so I used this wire…

that was 26 gauge.  It is what I had on hand and worked like a charm… the vids I watched showed various sizes.  You should be able to find some wire in the craft/jewelry making section of your local big box craft store.  It cut easy with my scissors too!  No craft wire cutters needed.

Wrap the wire around your pencil or similarly sized diameter pen and wrap the wire around it 3 or 4 times.  I did 6 times for 2 action wobbles…

Now punch out your 1″ (or whatever size you have… ) solid shapes… I used a CM fancy square punch because I couldn’t find the circle size I wanted to use.  No one will see it so it doesn’t matter the shape as long as it is solid to tape to.  Apply tape to the bottom half and top half circles of wire after you have taken it off the pencil.  Now tape the top and bottom to your solid shapes… it will look like this….

and the excess tape can just be wrapped around the solid shape like this…

Then add glue dots to the top and bottom of your solid shape and place it where you want it then add the leaf or whatever you want to add action to … to your project… like this…

It works!  Yahooo!!!!

I then embellished my cards with ribbon… and added a knot of some burlap I had left over to my odd leaf to make it feel better (hehe)…

This now has a home in my living room as fall decor… the other one… is probably for my mom’s card stack I am making for her 🙂

I hope this has inspired you to find some wire… maybe a wiretie from your loaf of bread in the pantry???  And make your own action wobble for your project.  Whatever you choose… take some time to craft the season.  Fall is a fun time to start or get back to it!

Happy crafting!  Kathi

Making a fall banner!

I admit it… as much as I love warm weather … and I do!!!!  I am ready for fall and all the fun festive decorating… love Halloween and just the change of seasons… this may be my last change as we are planning to move to Fla next year but for now… we will soak up the fall… so why not start the festivities off with a nice banner that says “Blessings”!

It’s home is over our TV in a “dead space” that I thought me and my craft self could cover… What do you think?

The close up is my favorite!  I love seeing it in the room… here is how I did it!

I started with basic supplies:
paint
chipboard pieces (I got mine from CTMH for $5.00 and it comes with 10 pcs and jump rings)
cricut (and gypsy or Design studio preferred but not necessary)
CTMH Art Philosophy Cartridge for Cricut
Stickles
4 pieces cardstock ( at least one should be solid)
ribbon if you want to hang your banner with (you can use the jump rings if you don’t want a decorator look)

First I painted all the pieces I planned to use… to make the word Blessings I used 9 of the 10 pieces… I saved the last to use on a card or some future project.  They are set at 4″ height and come in 4 styles.

Before I painted I decided how I wanted them laid out then painted them in that order….

I used latex paint because it matched my living room and I wanted this to look nice on the front and back… so I painted all the edges and inside the holes with the paint to cover all of one side and most of the other.

Now it was time to design the banner base and component parts…
Here is how my pages looked on the gypsy… notice how I left almost no negative space….

and the second layer to finish the 9 4″ banner pieces and more minimal negative space as well!

I even had room for an A2 card on this one!
Then I cut them out… check out this great tip of cutting out various shapes you think you can use in the future from paper that will get thrown out or end up in a scraps pile and never used!  Thanks Sheila at She’s a Sassy Lady blog!  Love that tip on your Gypsy Made Easy tutorials 🙂

Now back to the banner.
I took the cut out pieces and used my fave pink ATG gun to glue it well to the not all painted side of my chipboard banner pieces matching the shapes accordingly… then I chose to ink my edges with “Wrap me in Chocolate” by Megan Elizabeth.  Have you found her yet on Above Rubies Studio?  She has taught me tons!

Anyway… next it was time to cut out the chocolate squares so I pulled out my new Spellbinders I have been dying to use and used 2 sizes of scalloped squares with my Cuttlebug…

I chose 4 smaller and 5 larger scalloped squares.  Then I cut my letters out using this design on my gypsy

Notice again that I used up the space left over this time with some scalloped edging I will use on cards… it is lacey looking paper and I thought that would be a nice addition!  I chose the CTMH Art Philosophy Cart again because I think this font is classy and I wanted to add some stickles and the dogs on it make it perfect for Dressing Up!

In this close up the afternoon sun is messing up your view of the gorgeous paper I used for this project.. and the stickles I chose was “Copper” out of my stash!

Repeat for the 8 more tiles and whalaaah!

And that is how you make a beautiful banner!

Hope thing has been a blessing to you!  Please give me feedback on what you like or what you would like to see… in the meantime I will keep crafting!
